My Weekend: the teaser

Longer post to follow when i’m more awake.

Saw Hot Fuzz - ridiculously funny and a great spoof. Some of the best mocking of one-liner’s I’ve ever seen. I laughed till I hurt and then laughed some more.

Today I was in PA, my mom and I went to see my granddad, and took him to a showing of the The Odd Couple at Allenberry. Even for a show that dated, it’s still remarkably funny - but then, isn’t almost everything Neil Simon wrote that way?

Nighthawk had it’s 50K checkup - it was fast and cheap. Then today I added another 330 miles.

Anyway, elaboration and some pics are on the way, so long as the camera didn’t wipe them like it threatened to.

Traffic accidents stand out more when they involve the car you’re driving.

Ok, that title is a bit misleading. But you’re paying attention. No, I didn’t wreck Nighthawk. I did however pass by an accident involving an Element. It was on the opposite side of Route 1, so I didn’t get too slowed down, only by rubberneckers. It looks like most of the accident was cleaned up, but it was pretty clear that they’d needed the jaws of life on the Element. Now, the Element’s doors join directly together - so it was quite an interesting sight. It looked like Superman had drove is hands in and just pulled with all his power.

What makes passing that kind of accident resonate is that it drives home the possible outcomes of driving your vehicle. Especially to someone like me, who is just tempting fate with my commute. I mean, tomorrow the car goes in for the 50,000 Mile checkup. In just over 18 months of ownership. Statistically, I’ve got a really awful accident brewing. I’ve only been in one, and it was just damage to the car, with no injury to me, and no other vehicles. If I keep staying off fate for too long, I’m gonna end up at the bottom of a pile up.

I guess the good news is that it looks like it’s easy to get into the with the Jaws of Life. But at the same time you drive by and wonder “I wonder if the design of the car is more likely to necessitate that.” Not that I’m too worried about it. The rest of the car was in good shape, and it didn’t look like the driver would have been too badly hurt. Being somewhat a believer in Murphy’s Law, I’ll probably get Pitt maneuvered on the bridge by some blue hair and my tank’s gonna go through the guard rail into the canal. Despite it’s name, I don’t think Nighthawk can fly. Float is probably a long shot too. Would make for an interesting commute, however…

Wait, I’m not that old, am I?

A conversation I had earlier:

Matt: in mother russia, shirt reads you
Me: I can’t believe people are still making Yakoff Smirnoff jokes these days.
Matt: lol what?

Granted, he saw the t-shirt on a site I sent him to, but am I really that old that I can know who Yakoff Smirnoff is? Or have I just watched too much Night Court in syndication?

The “OK, I’m done ranting, time for updates” post

My, aren’t I wordy tonight. Normally I would have rolled all of those posts into one, but there would have been no way to keep them coherent. Besides, it makes it hard to find things when I look for them later. If you haven’t noticed, I blasted out three posts in rapid succession, so make sure you scroll down.

First off, the Element rolled over 50k miles last week. That, plus gas prices inching higher and higher makes for a really depressing commute.

If I didn’t mention it, I’ve been to two Odyssey tournaments since DE’s. I’ve had fun and learned at both. Now only Worlds is in the future, and I’m really looking forward to that.

Not much more than that. Some wiring at my moms office that turned out to be a crap load more complicated than it needed to be, and a major victory in the war with the flora. I finally won the tug of war with the Multiflora Rosa. While I have plenty of battle scars to show for it, the bush is in much worse shape than I am. Of course, any retailiation from this particular plant will result in the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Mostly RoundUp. Or Agent Orange if I can get my hands on it.

Oh, one last thing. I added a spam prevention thing to comments on this thing, mostly cause I was tired of deleting them. I like the system that I used, cause I get to set all the random words. If you look long enough, you’ll see a pattern. If you have any problems posting comments, let me know.

Why must the Sci-Fi channel ruin the things I love?

Ok, I know they haven’t aired it yet, but they’ve completely screwed the pooch on the end of SG-1. It’s a non-ending. It’s just filler to get to the end so that they can make a bunch of straight to DVD movies. That ploy didn’t work for Babylon 5 very well, and I don’t expect it will work well here either. The continuance of story I like, but why didn’t they just wrap up that show, and cart off the favorites to Atlantis? Or if they had to continue the SG-1 storyline, why not just take Atlantis and bring it into the fold, and show both sides of a massive battle in this galaxy and the Pegasus galaxy?

Of course, while Atlantis at least had a good cliffhanger for the end of the season, they killed off a rather loved character right near the end. Which sucks. I mean, it makes for good drama, and brings in decent emotional balance to a techie show, but it seemed so senseless a way to go. Of course, they then make you really torn as to bringing him back, because his replacement is from the cast of Firefly. I realize that Sci-Fi didn’t ruin that show (Fox did a spectacular job all by themselves) but they’re certainly toying with geeks. I mean, they sorta atone for the cancellation of FarScape, but then to try to geek people out with FireFly? You’re talking the three biggest geek obsessions in the last 10 years that didn’t have “Star (space) something” in the title.

Of course, like a sheep, I will watch the seasons to come, and even the straight to DVD movies. But I’ve put ten years into these shows, and I’m damn well gonna see how they end. I just wish they put the wishes of fans first, and the bottom line second. I wonder if they realize the income potential of them doing that.
