So let’s catch up.
Since the last post, Halloween happened, as did Election day, and I finally got back to the movies. Let’s start at the beginning I guess.
My office has a costume contest every year, though I haven’t participated in the last few years because I was an Overnighter, and people would only see the costume for a half hour or so. Also, being an overnighter, no body knows who you are, which doesn’t help you in the voting. But now that I’m back on days, I decided I was going to give it a shot. If you recall the Christmas post, you’ll remember that I got a Star Trek uniform. While that in itself isn’t much of a costume, I knew I could make it a hit at the office. All I needed was a slight change in hair color. So I sent her an e-mail that basically said “Can you make my hair this color?” and attached this image:

And she did. She found a spray on hair color that worked very well. And came off in the shower, so I didn’t have to go around with the color for an extended period of time. I actually had a appointment for a hair cut at the end of last week, and was half way expecting to be clean shaven and bald if the coloring didn’t go well. The only problem I had was the shower - it was like Psycho and Carrie rolled into one. Anyway, this was the end result:
The outfit was surprisingly comfortable, but a little on the warm side. Oh, the costume contest? I ended up 4th. Behind two costumes I should have lost to, and a pimp.
I just realized that I haven’t mentioned who I am. I went as Lt. Commander Orson from Suite 205. It was a webcomic Kev and I did a few years back, and was somewhat work centered. Unfortunately the number of people at my office now that were at the office then is quite small. Though those that did know it are now wanting to read the old strips, which only Kev has at the moment, and keeps promising to put online somewhere. So, Kev, better get that done, or I’m gonna post your e-mail address, cell number, and home address so that these people can bug you directly as opposed to through me.
So election day. I’m not as excited about the outcome as some of you would imagine. This time the country voted for the other party, because they were fed up with the current party. Lots of decent, moderate Republicans lost their seats to Democrats just because they were Republican. Goody, we’re so ingrained into this two party system we don’t judge a candidate on their record or stands on issues any more, just what animal they choose to follow. No, I did not vote a straight party ticket. I never have. But I wonder how many people are just disgusted with their opposing party, and just go straight down the column. At least that’s how the voting machine here in DE works, I don’t know about others work. Besides, what we have now is a legislative branch of one party, and an executive branch with veto power of a different party. Oh, and uber liberal long time congress people running the committees. Congrats, we now have 2 years of jack shit getting done. Sure, Bush and Pelosi will have a sit down and say they’re gonna work together. But I seem to remember a handshake between Clinton and Gingrich a number of years ago as well that didn’t result into anything. And that was just on one issue, not the whole litany of problems there are out there.
Anyway, enough of that racket. Last night I actually got back into a movie theater for the first time in a while. For a double feature no less. Man of the Year was ok. It had its funny moments, but even some of the jokes Robin Williams used were recycled. On the whole, it seemed kind of dumbed down. Also, they rather under used Lewis Black, who is more of a political comic than Robin Williams ever was.
The other movie of the night was The Prestige. Quite a cool flick. Surprisingly some of the science that was flawed didn’t bother me, mostly because of what the character was willing to do to use it. I know a few people were kind of shocked, or at least confused by the ending, and that was the point. I saw the ending coming, and had it all figured out. But it was still entertaining - kind of hard to go wrong with that cast.
Next weekend I’m hoping to see the new Bond movie when I get back from camping on Sunday. This one has be interested on how they’re gonna affect the story line. The only problem I see is that they’ve gone back to the first book, the original Bond book, and are finally making a movie out of it. Well, no, they’re finally making an authentic movie out of it - MGM bought the rights to the first book and sat on it. After EON got the rights to the others, and started making successful movies with it, MGM made a spoof out of Casino Royale. It’s quite funny, and has a great cast. Check it out if you get the chance. Anyway, all the other books have movies for them, and I can’t imagine they’re gonna remake them. I mean, remaking Goldfinger and From Russia with Love seems silly now, since the world has changed so much. The ideas that wowed people then are now part of popular culture, and wouldn’t wow again. Why nuke Fort Knox, when the federal reserve has more gold, and would screw over more countries. So where they go will be interesting, and I hope how they start is as well. But i’ll have that report next weekend.
